The staff and treatments are lovely. The changing area, toilets and showers are appalling. Not in keeping with the main hotel which is beautiful. The above mentioned needs a complete overhaul to make it more appealing as I will not be returning as there are other hotels in Northumberland which are far superior. I enjoyed the day and it was value for money but I really think the hotel is let down by the changing area etc.
First impressions count: check in was done by an extremely friendly, helpful and professional young lady and the reception area was very Grand. However, our room was not, the beds were very comfortable and the room was in a prime position beside the spa with a beautiful view. Sadly the room was not as grand, it was tired, carpet looked very old and grubby, the single glazed sash window was black with mould and the bath panel was rotting and stained. Lamps were dusty as was the skirting and carpet edges.
The spa was very relaxing, though again lacked cleanliness, when looking for cups to enjoy a herbal tea we found in the drawers a tray full of dirty ones. There was sand in the jacuzzi that got inside our swimwear and the jacuzzi itself was so small with four people in we were all struggling to find space for our feet without touching strangers.
The restaurant was disappointing, very little choice, small portions, no vegetable sides and extremely expensive as was the bar menu. However, breakfast was the complete opposite, very good selection and quality was fabulous. Other clients had been informed in advance that the pub was closed, we were not! So it took 45 minutes to order food and drinks and almost 55 to pay the bill! The £25 towards Dinner didnt warrant the “includes” evening meal as it hardly dented the cost of one course so was very misleading. The two European waitressing staff were extremely hard working, yet exceptionally friendly, pleasant and professional despite working very long hours due to staff shortages. Unfortunately the same could not be said of Leo the barman, whom was rude, very UNwelcoming and insulting when we ordered afternoon tea. Afternoon tea was pleasant but with a massive overbalance of a few dried up finger sandwiches to a ratio of far more sweet scones and cakes, nothing special. The weekend deal was still pretty good, however, I think it’s fair to say this could be a beautiful hotel and spa if it was updated. It’s very out-dated, lack lustre and tired and other guests we met there agreed. This once grand accommodation is sadly now run down and in need of some TLC.
